Our Memory Care Program

Aspen Woods utilizes resident-centered care, a strategy emphasizing an adaptive service plan that meets the holistic needs of each resident and adapts care and services based on their preferences. Fundamentals of resident-centered care include knowing what makes each of our residents unique and complete, including their values, beliefs, interests, abilities, likes and dislikes— both past and present. This information informs every interaction and experience. We recognize and accept each resident’s reality to see the world from their individual perspectives. Doing so recognizes behavior as a form of communication, thereby promoting effective and empathetic communication that validates feelings and connection. Every experience and interaction is an opportunity for engagement that is meaningful to, and purposeful for, the individual living with dementia. It should support interests and preferences, allow for choice and success and recognize that even when the dementia is most severe, the person can experience joy, comfort and meaning in life. Our residents are treated with dignity and respect, and their individuality is always supported. It is about “doing with” rather than “doing for” as part of a supportive and mutually beneficial relationship. Our approach creates and maintains a supportive community for individuals, families and team members that allows for comfort and opportunities for success. We value each person and respect differences, celebrate accomplishments and provide access to engagement and shared experiences. We evaluate care practices regularly and make appropriate changes. It is important to regularly evaluate progress and practices, share findings and make adjustments to interactions, programs and practices as needed.
